Ghosts of Commercial Street:
A Fever Dream of the Chinese Legacy in Nevada Cityš
June 6 - July 6
Join us from 6ā9p during the
Downtown Art Walk for the opening reception of new work by local artist Joie King.
Artist Joie King presents
Ghosts of Commercial Street: A Fever Dream of the Chinese Legacy in Nevada City - a hallucinatory new series that brings to life the buried legacy of Chinese laborers during the Gold Rush. Layered with symbolism, ancestral grief, and spiritual reverence, her work explores questions of belonging, memory, and how we honor those who came before us. As a Chinese American artist living in Nevada County, Joie brings a deeply personal lens to this work: "
Iām painting for my children, to help them understand what happened here, to feel proud of their heritage, to know they belong."
Hosted here at Winnie Superette, on Commercial Street - once the heart of the old Chinese quarter and the inspiration for this series - this show is both a personal and historical homecoming.
Joie King is a painter and muralist based in Nevada County, California. Her work explores themes of cultural identity and belonging in the American landscape. She can be reached at
